AFROGIS Kermit said, “It isn’t easy being green.” We certainly know that it is not easy being AFROG! Particularly in a close-knit community such as Stillwater, it is possible that the elected officials you question are acquaintances, friends, neighbors and even relatives. Most people rather complain about government activity than rock the boat. However, we are willing to stand in the face of criticism for questioning our friends and neighbors. WHY? Government in the United States is supposed to be “for the people and by the people.” There have always been watchdog groups and political activists who are a much needed part of the governmental process. On April 15, 2009, the news was filled with Tea Party events and groups emerging from their comfort zones to say, “Enough is enough.” Some of us have been a voice in the local governmental process since 1993. We met during the last 16 years at board meetings where each of us had individual issues and interests to address, only to find ourselves embroiled with more questions than answers. Our common ground developed when we found ourselves always asking WHY when responses to thoughtful and concerning issues were: 1) Not answered, 2) A round about answer, or 3) Dismissed with “you just don’t understand.” If it matters to you about party affiliation, we readily share that we are enrolled as independents, democrats, republicans and conservatives. Bottom line – we are non-partisan. From where we sit on our lily pad, how our elected officials do the job is our primary interest.
